Portland: I used to spend a week there each May in 1980's and early 90's. I still visit occasionally, Portland is a place I like very much, juxtaposition of industry, industrial waste, natural beauty. It looks different now the submarine base has gone and you can get a really decent meal in the prison restaurant (!). i stay at the Bird Observatory in the old lower lighthouse (Marie Stopes used to live in the Old Upper Lighthouse. Both were replaced long ago by a third lighthouse which is in use today. Bird Observatory accommodation £10 a night, self catering. They run x3 MV lights each night and you can get to see a selection of mist net captured birds (ask the warden). The "thrift" just west of the visitor centre by the causeway supports Omophlus rufipes a very scarce (in UK) Alleculid confined to a football pitch patch there and smaller site near Osmington. In summer Portland supports good population of Marbled White and species of "blue" butterfly. I've a few Portland images in my LJ photos. A cousin was a "boffin" at the sub base - sonar specialist, often away from home for the duration of a mission. Never knew what he did until after he died.
